Roku Box as an Alternative to a Mac Mini Media Center

Streaming Netflix is one of the things that many people plan on doing when they set up their Mac Mini Media Centers.  If that’s the only thing you need out of your media center a cheaper and simpler alternative is a Roku or Roku HD player.

I’ve already mentioned a few of the plusses of such a set up.  And really there isn’t much more to the product.  It is primarily for streaming NetFlix but there are other premium and free channels that you can access through a Roku box.  Does anybody care about those other channels though?  It’s probably more important to mention that it does not stream YouTube or Hulu.

You should also know if you’re not already familiar with what NetFlix offers for instant viewing that it does not include the whole library of DVDs.  Still, what is offered it is plenty to keep a lot of people satified.  Folks have even quit their cable or satellite subscriptions because the content available on Netflix and Amazon on Demand is sufficient.

Even with it’s shortcomings Roku players seem to be a great deal for the money.  I don’t have one myself but from reading reviews on Amazon I see that many people are happy with this product.  They seem less impressed with the customer service, so if you do buy one cross your fingers and hope you don’t have to contact the company.
